HEATH & STEVENSON, Laurel Factory. Prince George Co.. Md, ROBERT BAIRD, Agent, Richmond, Va. 6-y Land for 8ale. IOHN T. GILMORE now offers for sale a portion of his swamp lands in the county of Cumberland about 14 miles below Fayetteville, aud about 1^ miles East of (he Cape Fear River. The entire swamp has been suc cessfully drained, of the large body of water by which it was heretofore covered. The laud is apparently level, being free from ridges (which are so common to swamp lands generally,) whilst there is an abundance of fall, by which the rain water can be carried off by ordinary ditche.s. .A small portion of the land has been in cultivation about 7 years, and those persons who have seen the crops regard the land as equal in fertility to any they have seen in this State or elsewhere. The location is healthy, the neighborhood good, and the ac cess to Fayetteville and Wilmington easy by means of a good road li miles iu length leading directly to the river. Besides this, it is within 3 miles of a beautiful little village, upon a high and healthy Bluff, at the river, with a i^tore, Ware-house and first-rate landing. All w^hich afford many conveniences to the neighbor hood. As several persons have spoken of purchasing, this is deemed a proper time to call their attention lo the subject, inasmuch as there is a crop now growing upon a small portion of the land, by which they cau judge of its production. Reasonable terms will be given to the purchaser. Sept. 10. 1858. 45tf SECOND nil STOl'R FOR 1858! NUMBER 3, I CONTAINING A FAMILI.AR HISTORY AND DESCRIP- I I TION OF NORTH CAROLIN.A. I Selections in Prose and Verse; many of them by emineut citizens of the State. : HISTORICAL AND CHRONOLOGICAL TABLES. ' And a variety of Miscellaneous Information and Sta tistics, by I C. #1. HfJLA’l*. Number 3 is a new and revised edition of the North Carolina Reader, first published in 1851. Numbers 1 anl 2 just issued, complete the series, which is, as a wliole, cheaper than any other series of Readers in the United States, and as complete. The Editor (Prof. Hubbard) in his Preface to Num ber 1 deems it proper lo allude to a few of ihe peculiar advantages aimed at by the Superintenaeni of Commcu Schools while making efforts to have this work com pleted. These are, 1. The encouragement of a feeling of self-dependence, and the enlistment of popular sentiment in behalf of the State and its institutions. It was not thought important, how^- ever, to have more than one number of the Reader of merely a local interest. 2. To remedy the evil everywhere complained of in coni- mon schooln, of a perpetual change in text books; an expen sive habit, aud one whiteh injures the Schools by pre venting the children from being classified. X series of home Readers, it was supposed, would be certainly used, and this great evil thus avoided. 3. Economy, the popular system of Readers being too long and Vjeing made so often merely lo add to the profits of authors and publishers. This series is to consist of fewer numbers than those generally u.sed, and it is believed that these numbers are sufficient, while if the system were universally used in the State, the sum saved to parents and children would amount to several thousand dollars annually. 4. To put in the hands of child/eti h nming to read com- positions sufjficien'ly familiar but not of the character called childish compositiom, containing, in lessons easy enough for all ages, correct specimens of style, interesting in matter, and inculcating proper morals, and religious in struction. The prices are, for No. 1, 25 cents; No. 2, 37J cents and No. 3, 75 cents. \ liberal deduction from these prices to Merchants and .School Teachers. WESTERN RAIL ROAD. -¥otice to Contractors.
